E-Waste | Recycling Used Computers, Monitors & Other Electronics

Used computers, monitors and other electronic equipment that is disposed of improperly have the potential to contaminate our environment and prematurely fill our existing landfills. Companies that don't comply with state and federal regulations can face thousands of dollars in fines and cleanup costs as a result. Universal Recycling Technologies (URT) eliminates these risks and ensures that the environment is protected by recycling obsolete equipment and components, managing hazardous materials and turning your waste into a reusable commodity.

Located throughout the United States, URT's electronics recycling processing centers have more than 40 combined years of experience in recycling, data security, environmental compliance and asset management.

The cheapest methods of managing e-waste may not be the most responsible and may expose generations to liability in many forms both here and abroad. When you partner with URT, you reap the benefits associated with an established company that protects the best interests of your organization and the environment. We guarantee our process from product tracking and data security to hazardous waste accountability. When your company and our environment is at stake, don't settle for anything less.

Electronic Waste (E-Waste)

  • Barium: Used in the front panel of the CRT (cathode ray tube) to protect users from radiation. Short-term exposure to barium can cause brain swelling, muscle weakness and damage to the heart, liver and spleen.
  • Beryllium: Found on motherboards and connectors, beryllium is a human carcinogen.
  • Brominated Flame Retardants: Likely endocrine disrupters, these flame retarants reduce levels of the hormone thyroxin in exposed animals and can potentially harm the developing fetus.
  • Cadmium: Found in SMD chip resistors, infrared detectors, semiconductors, older types of cathode ray tubes and some plastics, cadmium is linked to kidney damage and may harm fragile bones.
  • Hexavalent Chromium: Used to protect untreated and galvanized steel plates from corrosion and as a hardener for steel housing, hexavalent chromium can cause DNA damage and asthmatic bronchitis.
  • Lead: CRT (cathode ray tube) displays contain 4-8 pounds of lead. Lead is also found in solder. Lead is toxic to the kidneys, nervous and reproductive systems, and inhibits mental development of young children and fetuses.
  • Mercury: Found in light bulbs in flat panel displays, switches and printed wiring boards. Linked to brain and kidney damage. Mercury, which can be passed through breast milk and fish consumption, is also extremely harmful to  developing fetuses.
  • Plastics: Found in printed circuit boards and components such as connectors, plastic covers and cables, the average computer contains up to 13.8 pounds of plastic. Dioxin can be formed when PVC is burned. Combinations of plastics are hard to separate and recycle.

"URT: Universal Recycling Technologies (formerly CRT Processing) is a wonderful example of a business in the private sector that acts responsibly toward the environment and provides jobs to the local economy. Their role in recycling E-Waste, while keeping it out of the landfill and putting it into the recycling stream, is an invaluable service to us all. With the emphasis on 'green' practices in many areas of our society, this industry in general and URT Processing in specific, are shining examples of how business can be conducted correctly and successfully while benefitting both the private and public sector. I would also like to add that the employees of URT are always professional and a pleasure to work with."

"We have been a partner with URT: Universal Recycling Technologies (formerly CRT Processing) for just over a year. Our first interaction with the company was in preparation for the roll out of the Oregon E-Cycles program, where we act as a collector and Universal Recycling Technologies as a processor. We spent time getting to know about each other's operations and needs, and tailored an agreement that would serve both interests. During the year, we made slight adjustments to help each other out, streamline the process, and assure that each company is operating efficiently. Most important, we felt, from day one, was that URT was a company with a culture of integrity and honesty. This has proven to be true, and we continue to look for other business opportunities that will enhance our partnership."
