Janesville, WI (September 21, 2011) – Universal Recycling Technologies, LLC (URT) is partnering with Rock County Clean Sweep to host a free electronics recycling collection event. On October 8, 2011, from 8 am to noon, URT will collect old and obsolete electronics at the URT recycling facility located at 2535 Beloit Avenue in Janesville, Wis. Electronics recycling will be provided at no cost. Registration is not required to drop off electronics.
At the same time, at the Rock County Highway Garage at 3715 Newville Road in Janesville, Wis., Rock County Clean Sweep will operate a drop-off site for hazardous chemical waste such as mercury, pesticides and solvents, among other materials, from homes and farms in Rock County. Space is limited and reservations are required. Participants may RSVP via phone by calling Land Conservation at 608-754-6617 ext. 3 during normal business hours. A list of accepted chemicals and detailed instructions on how to participate are also available online at http://www.co.rock.wi.us/clean-sweep. Please be aware that latex paint is not allowed. Rock County Clean Sweep is for Rock County residents only. Businesses must use Business Clean Sweep.
Community collection events are one way URT promotes responsible recycling, helping to keep potentially toxic materials out of landfills and away from developing countries ill-equipped to deal with the waste. Electronic waste, and in particular the leaded glass used in older-model TV screens and computer monitors, is hazardous if not properly recycled. Electronic equipment contains poisons like lead and cadmium, which can leech into the environment, potentially contaminating soil and groundwater.
URT’s Janesville campus, which includes its corporate office and two processing facilities, recently attained certification to the e-Stewards® Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment. The e-Stewards Electronic Recycling Certification is the first fully accredited, independently audited certification program designed to ensure that e-waste will be responsibly–and accountably–recycled, and not dumped in developing countries. e-Stewards certified recyclers adhere to the strictest available recycling standards in the industry. URT’s Janesville campus is also ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 certified.
